“Business actually needs what the Arts have to offer in order to survive. Creativity, imagination, flexibility, adaptability, effective communication, visionary tendencies and apparent insecurity have always been the staple diet of artists “

John Grant, Brand Tarot, author New Marketing Manifesto

Why is creativity important in organizations and what is different about this approach?

It is widely recognized that with the pace of business moving so fast, that organisations need to be creative in order to meet the challenge. However the skills needed to develop creativity and innovation are in direct opposition to the analytic “left brain” skills that are required on the day-to-day running of most organisations. The ability to innovate enables developing a divergent way of thinking and communicating those ideas that produce unique and valuable new products and services that every organisation needs in order to thrive.

Most creativity programmes develop creativity through lateral thinking, using mind mapping or “thinking outside the box” techniques. Valuable as this is for problem-solving, this kind of creativity is sourced in the head and thinking processes and is as a result limited in its application.

Many people too find themselves foxed by these approaches and conclude they are not creative. What is more true is that these methods do not assist them in accessing their innate creativity.

Far more powerful is the creativity which comes from the whole self and which calls forth intuition, gut feelings and the body's wisdom and has a more far reaching impact. This kind of creativity is accessible to everyone and quickly and easily learnt.

As well as people discovering surprising creative resources, groups and teams that are able to work in this way are able to work together harmoniously, with an aligned individuality, power struggles fade away, utilising energies for the greater good of the team and the organization as a whole.

How does it work?

Stories have been used to inspire and instruct humans since the beginning of time. We learn more effectively through story because we are able to relate emotionally to its concepts through the characters and the situations that they find themselves in.

Making Moves programmes works with myths and stories of universal relevance that relate to important themes and issues in the organization.

Using drama structures that have been adapted to the needs of business, the process reaches parts that other approaches don't reach because it works directly on the unconscious using the language of the unconscious - story. At the same time the experience is fun and expansive, bringing about new awareness and surprising insight.

A story will be chosen that relates to the specific issues at hand. The story will distract the mind and draw out the issues within the organization or individual through a metaphorical language. This enables issues to be worked with and through without exposure and for issues that would normally remain hidden to emerge in safe way, without damaging sensitive relationships.

Sometimes it is enough for these issues to be expressed through a metaphorical language which will resolve the situation on its own, at other times it is important that the issues are worked through to resolution which can be done entirely through the creative vehicle.
