RITUAL THEATRE BOOK

RitualTheatreCover mediaThe Rebirth of Ritual Theatre as a Potent Healing Force

‘Claire Schrader’s new book on the healing aspects of ritual theatre fulfills Joseph Campbell’s vision of a remythologized world, one in which we would be, as he loved to quote Cezanne, more “in accord with nature.” This book is alternately informative, exhilarating, scholarly, and soulful. If widely read, its insights into the psychodynamics of drama will help illuminate the sacred in our personal and collective lives.’
- Phil Cousineau, author of The Hero’s Journey: Joseph Campbell on his Life and Work, Wordcatcher, and The Art of Pilgrimage

Life Story was a unique theatre project which enabled unwaged people to transform an aspect of their “life story” into a piece of theatre. The project was an oportunity for unemployed people to use the power of theatre to inspire, uplift and transform the mundanity of life experiences into artistic expression.

Employment agencies may wonder what making theatre has to do with getting people back to work. If being employed isn’t bad enough, what if something difficult happened to you that has blocked you from moving forward in your life, what if you know you’ve got talent but can’t see a way of developing it.

Life Story enabled a group of young people overcome such hurdles – one was a comic rendition of a near suicide experience, another a young woman’s triumph over being bullied that lead to mental health issues.

The project was an opportunity for these young people to expose their vulnerabilities and initiate a pathway for change.
